Swimming in Katong Since 1975
Katong Swimming Complex opened on 1 September 1975, making it one of the oldest surviving public swimming complexes in Singapore. It was renovated in 2008. The pool sits on Wilkinson Road in the Katong district, surrounded by mature palm trees that give it a distinctly tropical feel.
Katong has a long history with water. In 1931, the Katong Park Bathing Pagar opened as Singapore's first public sea swimming enclosure, stretching 50 yards long and 100 feet into the sea with 40 dressing rooms. It was demolished in the 1960s when land reclamation reshaped the coastline.
The name "Katong" comes from the Malay word for an extinct species of sea turtle that once nested on these shores. The broader Katong and Joo Chiat area is one of Singapore's richest heritage districts. Chew Joo Chiat (1857 to 1926), known as the "King of Katong", bought vast tracts of land cheaply and made his fortune when the area urbanised. Joo Chiat was designated a conservation area in 1993 and became Singapore's first Heritage Town in 2011. The district is known for Peranakan shophouses, Katong laksa and a mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian communities.
